Erika.jpgMcGee, Hearne & Paiz, LLP (MHP) welcomed five new Audit Associates in August, one of whom we are pleased to announce is Erika Varela-Ortega.  Erika completed her degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Northern Colorado in May.

Erika grew up in Durango, Mexico and Greeley, Colorado.  Erika said, "My parents wanted a better life for me.  I can't imagine a different life where I couldn't do what I love, where I wouldn't have a voice, and I am deeply grateful for their sacrifices that have allowed me to pursue my dreams.  I owe my family everything."

When asked how she chose accounting and how she chose MHP, Erika responded, "It was a long path to get here.  I am the first of my family to go to college.  I did not know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and took a Finance class with the encouragement of my friends.  I then decided to try an Accounting class, and I was hooked.  When I was interviewed by Andy Worshek and Nola Rocha at a recruiting event, I was very impressed with them and wanted to be a part of an organization that employed such great people.  I am delighted to say that my first impression has been validated since I have joined the Firm."

Erika said Audit is a very good fit for her.  "I am passionate about helping people.  Auditing helps to ensure that funds for many programs that help those in our community are used properly."

As a newcomer to our community, Erika is excited about taking advantage of volunteer opportunities.  She is especially attracted to entities that are focused on children.  "Children are the building blocks of the future and they deserve to be helped, cared for, and encouraged."

Erika is a voracious reader across all genres but, in her spare time, you will find her with her family and friends.  When asked how she wants to be remembered, Erika replied, "I want to be remembered for changing lives.  I don't think we realize how much we impact those around us.  I want to have a positive impact on my new profession, my new community, and my new home at MHP."
