Alex Visser - The Newest CPA at McGee, Hearne & Paiz, LLP

October 31, 2016

Alex grew up in Ogden, Utah and then attended Utah State University before transferring to the University of Wyoming (UW). He graduated from UW in May 2012 with his bachelor's degree in accounting and started with McGee, Hearne & Paiz, LLP (MHP) that June as an auditor.

Before finding his place in accounting, Alex worked as a manager, customer service representative and even a beekeeper. Alex was asked why he chose accounting and he stated, "My grandfather did tax preparation and he was always one of my biggest supporters.  I've always liked numbers and accounting turned out to be a really good fit for me." When asked about his work and why he loves his job, Alex said "I really enjoy working with all the different clients as it adds a bit of change to my job every few weeks. It is almost like working at a new job a few times a month. I also really enjoy the puzzle aspect of auditing and putting all the pieces together."

Taking all of the exams and becoming a licensed CPA is a difficult task. With 4 exams in all and material encompassing such a broad range of topics (Regulation, Financial Accounting and Reporting, Business Environment and Concepts and Auditing and Attestation) it can be difficult to study for. Alex stated, "I found it especially difficult to split my time between studying, my growing responsibilities with the Firm, and my new little boy." Once Alex passed the first section of the exam, he became more motivated to keep going. Alex also stated how rewarding it was once it was done. He credits his wife, coworkers and his peers for giving him support.

When he is not at work, Alex enjoys spending time with his wife, Ashlee, and his little boy, Porter, who is almost 16 months old now. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and occasionally playing video games.
